Joseph Cowell, psychologist
Life can be fast paced and challenging. Sometimes the many pieces and demands can lead to physical and emotional exhaustion, confusion, feeling overwhelmed and at the extreme, feeling disillusioned. One great benefit in starting the therapy process is giving oneself permission to pause and reflect and hopefully as a result find clarity, direction and renewal in purpose.
One of the joys I experience being a therapist is building rapport and “connecting” with each individual in their own uniqueness. I believe therapy works best when there is a collaboration between therapist and client; there is respect for the knowledge, life experience and insights that the client brings to the table. One of the best compliments I have gotten over the years was from one of my adult, female clients when her sister asked about her comfort level talking to a man about her personal business. She responded, “Joe isn’t a man, he is my therapist!”
I am semi retired having worked most of my 40+ year career in community mental health. Thus, I have worked with individuals with varying mental health disorders including the persistently mentally ill client and individuals struggling with everyday situational stressors. My clinical orientation is client centered and cognitive behavioral. I have worked mostly with adolescent male clients (juvenile sex offending) as well as adult male and female clients.
I look forward to getting to know you.
